The research project "Public Reinsurance in Multilevel Polities (EUROPE RE)", awarded to Prof. Christian Freudlsperger, kicks off on 1 April 2024. The five-year project is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) with 1.8 million CHF. It seeks to develop a novel understanding of the European Union as a provider of "public reinsurance" against transboundary risks such as military conflict, pandemics, and climate change.
At its meeting of 6 and 7 March 2024 and upon application of Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich, the ETH Board appointed Christian Freudlsperger Assistant Professor of Multilevel Politics in the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences.
The Journal of European Public Policy has published Prof. Christian Freudlsperger’s article “Europe Re: The Rise of the European Reinsurance Polity”. The paper, which provides the conceptual framework for the five-year EUROPE RE project, sets out a novel understanding of the European Union as a provider of public reinsurance to its member states.
